Barnard 163

on

For the most part if you see “Barnard” in an astrophotographer, you can be pretty sure it’s of a dark nebula and this is no exception. Barnard’s catalog of dark nebulae is a favorite for many imagers.

This one is often overlooked because it’s part of the same ball of gas and dust where the Elephant Trunk Nebula resides so it tends to get all the attention unless someone is doing a wide field version. We decided to focus on some of the smaller regions of darkness and this was the result. It’s not as spectacular as the Elephant Trunk but it’s still a really interesting place to point a camera!

The nebula is about 3,000 light years away in Cepheus. For all the technical details, see astrobin.
