Skull and Crossbones Nebula

on

The Skull and Crossbones Nebula is an emission nebula in the constellation Puppis. This is a southern constellation but not so far south that we can’t see it from mid-northern latitudes though it doesn’t get very high.

The nebula is also known as NGC 2467. I think the NGC designation was originally for what was thought be a single open cluster but has since been determined to be several groups of stars that happen to lie along the same line of sight from Earth. These days, at least among amateurs, when there is a catalog designation that refers to an open cluster where nebulosity also happens to be the designation also gets applied to the nebula and that’s what is going on here.

The nebula is around 4,400 light years away.

This is 43h 40m of HOOSY data with RGB stars. For all the technical details, see astrobin.
