NGC 6823 and Sh2-86 (SHO)

NGC 6823 is an open cluster in Vulpecula. Vulpecula is a constellation you may never have heard of but it has a fairly well known occupant: Messier 27, the Dumbbell Nebula. The nebulosity surrounding the open cluster is Sh2-86 and it’s the real subject of the image.

The open cluster formed about 50 million years ago so has very young stars. It’s about 50 light years across and is about 6,000 light years away. The nebula is much, much larger

I didn’t find much info on the nebula itself. I don’t know whether NGC 6823 is gravitationally associated with the nebula or just a foreground cluster that is coincidentally in front of it. The nebula does have several star forming regions in it (those distinctive pillars)

Overall this is 97h 30m of integration but 21 of those hours were dedicated to getting RGB stars (which was probably far too much) so it’s really 76h 30m of SHO integration with 18h of RGB stars. You can find all the technical details on astrobin.
