NGC 7640

Everyone knows about the Andromeda Galaxy (AKA Messier 31), but there are other deep sky objects in Andromeda worth of our attention. This one, NGC 7640, is a barred spiral galaxy around 29.7 million light years away.

Though we are near to lookin at the galaxy edge on, we can see obliquely across the disk well enough to see two prominent spiral arms. It still amazes me that amateur telescopes can see structure across nearly 30 million light years!

It was discovered by William Herschel in 1786.

This is 31h 55m of LRGB data. For the technical details see astrobin.
